Stokes County Parole and Probation
North Carolina uses three distinct forms of community supervision. Probation is imposed by a court, often instead of an active prison term. A probation entry by itself does not prove that someone was released from the Stokes County Jail or a state prison. Parole is a discretionary release from prison and now applies mainly to older sentencing-law cases and limited special cases. Post-release supervision, often shortened to PRS, is the mandatory period that follows prison for people sentenced under current law.
The distinction matters when reading a Stokes County record. Active parole or PRS supports that the person has left state prison and is serving part of the sentence in the community. It does not mean the sentence has fully ended. Active probation confirms court-ordered supervision but may follow no prison stay at all. The NCDAC Offender Public Information search places these roles under its probation, parole, and post-release status fields.
| Supervision type | How it begins | What it shows about release |
|---|---|---|
| Probation | A court orders supervision in the community | Does not alone prove a jail or prison release |
| Parole | The Commission authorizes early prison release in an eligible case | Supports that prison custody ended, subject to the matching sentence |
| Post-release supervision | State law places a sentenced person under supervision after prison | Shows release from prison into supervised community status |
A few record terms help keep the result clear.
- Discharge
- The formal end of the listed supervision or sentence relationship.
- Absconder
- A person whom DAC lists as avoiding active supervision. It is not a custody status.
- Inactive
- An OPI status meaning the person is no longer active in that DAC role. Match it to the right sentence.
- Detainer
- A request or hold from another agency that can affect custody or release.
Verify Stokes County Post-Release Supervision
The most useful public source is OPI because DAC says the system holds state-prison, probation, and parole information back to 1972. It does not hold Stokes County jail-only histories. Search by offender number when possible, since that is the strongest identifier. A name search can be narrowed with birth date and identity fields, but each result must still be tied to the right person and sentence.
Use this sequence to check Stokes County post-release supervision without treating a roster absence as proof.
- Open the NCDAC OPI search and enter the offender number without leading zeroes. If no number is known, use first and last name, then add birth date or the Sounds Like option when spelling is uncertain.
- Open the matching record. Compare the offender number, date of birth, conviction county, docket, and sentence dates before relying on the status.
- Read both top-level fields: Inmate Status and Probation/Parole/Post Release Status. An inactive inmate status paired with active supervision generally means the person is outside prison but remains supervised.
- Review the sentence block. Actual Release Date confirms a completed prison exit more strongly than Projected Release Date, while parole dates and Service Status explain the supervision episode.
- If the office is not shown, use the official DAC Community Supervision directory and route Stokes questions to Judicial District 17.
The Stokes County released inmate search covers the county-jail and court paths when OPI has no record. A missing DAC result says nothing conclusive about a Stokes jail-only booking. Records can also contain several admissions or supervision terms, so an old inactive entry must not be mistaken for the current episode.
Note: OPI labels and access channels were checked July 30, 2026; read the live status and matching sentence before drawing a conclusion.
Stokes County Supervision Status Patterns
OPI separates prison status from supervision status because a person can leave prison and remain under DAC authority in the community. That two-field design is crucial for a Stokes County check. Active Inmate with an active incarceration summary means the person remains in a DAC prison. A future date on that record is a projected release, not proof that release occurred. Inactive inmate status paired with active probation, parole, or post-release status generally points to community supervision after prison, but the sentence must still match the person and event being checked.
When both top-level statuses are inactive, look deeper. An Actual Release Date and an expired service status on the matching sentence support a completed historical DAC episode. An inactive label alone can refer to an old period of probation or parole and does not identify the most recent Stokes County custody event. OPI can hold several sentences, admissions, and supervision terms for one person. Compare the docket, conviction county, sentence begin date, offense, and offender number before deciding which episode the status describes.
| OPI pattern | Reasonable reading | Required check |
|---|---|---|
| Active inmate, active incarceration | Still in DAC prison custody | Do not treat a projected date as release |
| Inactive inmate, active supervision | Outside prison and under community supervision | Match the sentence and actual release field |
| Both roles inactive | May be a completed historical episode | Find Actual Release Date and expired service status |
A location field on an inactive record can be administrative or historical. It should not be reported as the person’s present physical location. The same care applies to a parole end date, which marks supervision timing rather than the date prison custody ended. When public fields conflict with a court judgment or another primary record, preserve the offender number and exact field, then direct the correction question to DAC. Sheriff Joey Lemons’s office remains the custodian for Stokes jail-only records.
Stokes County Supervision Uses District 17
Stokes County belongs to NCDAC Community Supervision Judicial District 17 with Rockingham and Surry counties. The verified district referral point is in Reidsville. The reviewed DAC sources did not publish a Stokes-specific street office, so a Danbury probation office should not be guessed or added. This is the distinctive local route for office questions about a verified Stokes supervision record.

Stokes County Supervision and Absconders
Supervision conditions come from the judgment, state law, and the individual case. Public OPI data can show basic conviction, sentence, release, and status facts, but detailed community-supervision case files are confidential. The public status should not be stretched into claims about a person’s private case notes, treatment, contacts, or compliance history. For an apparent data conflict, keep the offender number and the field in question, then contact DAC through the correct official channel.
DAC provides an absconder reporting channel through Constituent Services at 1-888-646-0024. An absconder label means DAC believes the person is avoiding probation, parole, or post-release supervision. It does not prove the person has been arrested, returned to prison, or released again. Members of the public should not approach someone based on the listing. Report useful location information through the state channel and use official custody sources for any later status change.
NC SAVAN and VINELink can send custody-change notices, but a notice may reflect transfer between systems. It is not a permanent supervision certificate. County and DAC identifiers can differ, so a person who moves from the Stokes jail to state custody may need a second search and notification registration under the DAC number.
Stokes County Supervision and Discharge
Post-release supervision begins on the day a person leaves prison for supervised community status. Under North Carolina Article 84A, the release point and term depend on the offense class, sentence structure, earned-time calculation, and other case facts. General statutory periods cannot safely be turned into a personal end-date calculation. The judgment, current DAC computation, and matching OPI sentence control.
Completion of PRS terminates the sentence under the governing framework. In OPI, both top-level roles may eventually become inactive, and the sentence can show an expired service status. Those fields support completion only when they belong to the right sentence. Parole End Date is not the prison release date. Likewise, the end of supervision does not erase the underlying public record, and it is not the same legal event as an expunction.
The North Carolina post-release supervision statutes set the controlling rules. For older or special parole-law cases, the Post Release Supervision and Parole Commission handles parole decisions, while DAC Community Supervision manages field supervision.
See the Commission’s official explanation of its role.
